Mike Mullin: SURFACE TENSION
Young adult author of the Ashfall series, Mike Mullin, returns to Decorah for an event featuring his new fast-paced thriller Surface Tension. Mike will share his stories, talk about Surface Tension, and sign copies on Thursday, August 2 at 7:00 pm.
Mike Mullin previously visited Decorah and surrounding area schools for his Ashfall Trilogy. A crowd favorite, Mike talks about the facts behind the fiction and shares his own journey from scraping gum off desks to making a living as a writer.
Told in alternating viewpoints, Surface Tension, is a gripping young adult thriller. After witnessing an act of domestic terrorism while training on his bike, Jake is found near death, with a serious head injury and unable to remember the plane crash or the aftermath that landed him in the hospital. Unable to rely on his parents or law enforcement, Jake is forced to uncover the corruption behind the attack. Surface Tension is a timely look at the cultural and political tensions felt throughout the country.
What people are saying about Surface Tension:
[A] fast-paced thriller….There is something of Hitchcock in the narrative, with a blend between The Man Who Knew Too Much, North by Northwest, and Rear Window, and the story…is gripping and frightening. -- Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)
In this timely contemporary thriller…Mullin tells much of the story from the viewpoint of Betsy, the teenage daughter of the terrorist’s leader….contributing an additional layer of narrative tension. Mullin’s premise is riveting…[A] strong action story. -- Publisher’s Weekly

Under the bubbling hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano. Most people don't know it's there. The caldera is so large that it can only be seen from a plane or satellite. It just could be overdue for an eruption, which would change the landscape and climate of our planet.
It's been over six months since the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano. Alex and Darla have been staying with Alex's relatives, trying to cope with the new reality of the primitive world so vividly portrayed in Ashfall, the first book in this trilogy. It's also been six months of waiting for Alex's parents to return from Iowa.
The Yellowstone super-volcano nearly wiped out the human race. Now, almost a year after the eruption, the survivors seem determined to finish the job. Communities wage war on each other, gangs of cannibals roam the countryside, and what little government survived the eruption has collapsed completely. The ham radio has gone silent.
