Michael Perry: THE JESUS COW at Carrie Lee Elementary Auditorium
Dragonfly Books and the Decorah Public Library are thrilled to co-sponsor New York Times bestselling author and humorist Michael Perry with his new book The Jesus Cow. Michael will talk about his new book and share his hilarious stories on Tuesday, June 2 at 7:00 pm at the Carrie Lee Elementary Auditorium.
This event is free and open to the public.
Michael Perry is the New York Times bestselling author of the memoirs Population 485, Truck: A Love Story, Coop, and Visiting Tom. Full of humor and grace, Perry’s writing transforms rural life to reveal the absurd and touching moments in each day.
The Jesus Cow is Michael’s first fiction book for adults. In The Jesus Cow life is suddenly full of drama for low-key Harley Jackson: A woman in a big red pickup has stolen his bachelor’s heart, a Hummer-driving predatory developer is threatening to pave the last vestiges of his family farm, and inside his barn is a calf bearing the image of Jesus Christ. Hilarious and big-hearted, The Jesus Cow is a comic yet sincere exploration of faith and the foibles of modern life.
In addition to his memoirs, Michael Perry is the author of The Scavengers, a fiction book for middle-school readers. Michael’s essays and nonfiction have appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Backpacker, Outside, Runner’s World, Salon.com, and he is a contributing editor to Men’s Health magazine. His writing assignments have taken him to the top of Mt. Rainier with Iraq War veterans, into the same room as the frozen head of Ted Williams, across the United States with truckers and country music singers, and -- once -- buck naked into a spray-tan booth.
Raised on a small Midwestern dairy farm, Michael put himself through nursing school while working on a ranch in Wyoming, then wound up writing by happy accident. He lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves on the local volunteer fire and rescue service and is an intermittent pig farmer. He hosts the nationally-syndicated “Tent Show Radio,” performs widely as a humorist, and tours with his band the Long Beds (currently recording their third album for Amble Down Records). “A touching and very funny account. . . . Thoroughly engaging.”—New York Times
Mike Perry’s extraordinary and thoughtful account of meeting the people of his small hometown by joining the fire and rescue team was a breakout hit that “swells with unadorned heroism” (USA Today)
“Bottom line is, I’m the kind of guy who’s happy to go to the opera, but I should like to be allowed to wear steel-toed boots with my evening suit. I like to read Harper’s with a chaser of Varmint Hunter Magazine. Maybe that’s why I enjoy a good show under canvas.$14.99ISBN: 9780061240447Availability: Not On Our Shelves. “Somewhere between Garrison Keillor’s idyllic-sweet Lake Wobegon and the narrow-mindedness of Sinclair Lewis’s Main Street lies the reality of small-town life. This is where Michael Perry lives.”
