Rebecca Makkai: THE GREAT BELIEVERS
Dragonfly Books is pleased to welcome Chicago-based author Rebecca Makkai back to Decorah with her new novel The Great Believers. The Great Believers is a story of friendship and redemption during the carnage of the AIDs epidemic. Rebecca Makkai will share her stories, talk about The Great Believers, and sign books on Tuesday, August 21 at 7:00 pm at Dragonfly Books.
Rebecca Makkai previously visited Decorah with her collection of short stories Music for Wartime (Viking 2015). She is also the author of the novels The Hundred Year House (Viking 2014) and The Borrower (Penguin 2012).
Telling the stories of Yale Tishman in 1985 Chicago and Fiona Marcus in contemporary Paris, The Great Believers (Viking 2018) captures the devastation of the AIDs crisis in 1980s Chicago and the lasting effects on those who lost loved ones. Yale and Fiona’s intertwining stories take us through the heartbreak of the 80s and the chaos of the modern world, as both struggle to find goodness in the midst of disaster.
Rebecca Makkai is on the MFA faculties of Sierra Nevada College and Northwestern University, and she is the Artistic Director of StoryStudio Chicago. Her short fiction won a 2017 Pushcart Prize, and was chosen for The Best American Short Stories for four consecutive years (2008 - 2011).
Everyone is invited to join Dragonfly Books for this free author talk. If you find that you can't make it to the event but would still like to purchase one of Makkai’s books, just give Dragonfly Books a call at 563-382-4275.
