Tim Johnston: THE CURRENT
Dragonfly Books invites everyone to a free author talk with Iowa City author Tim Johnston as he talks about his new literary thriller The Current. Set in a small town in southeastern Minnesota, The Current weaves through time, families, wounds, and obsessions to create a gripping and heartbreaking story. Johnston will talk about his book, share his stories, and sign copies on Friday, March 15 at 7:00 pm at Dragonfly Books.
Tim Johnston’s debut novel, Descent, received widespread critical acclaim and was a New York Times bestseller. In The Current (Algonquin Books 2019), Johnston skillfully pushes the boundaries of literary mystery with an intriguing story and nuanced characters.
In the dead of winter, state troopers pull two young women and their car from the icy Black Root River. One is pronounced dead at the scene, while the other, daughter of the town’s retired sheriff, survives. What happened was no accident and news of the crime awakens memories of another young woman who lost her life in the same river ten years prior, and whose killer may still be among them. The Current is a story of small town crime, fathers and daughters, and the fragility of life.
In addition to Descent (Algonquin Books 2015), Tim Johnston is the author of the story collection Irish Girl, and the young adult novel Never So Green. Irish Girl won the 2009 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction. Johnston holds degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and lives in Iowa City.
