A follow up to Eskens’ USA Today bestselling novel The Life We Bury, The Shadows We Hide (Mulholland Books 2018) is the riveting and insightful story of one man’s investigation into the murder of the father he never knew.

Joe Talbert, Jr. has never once met his namesake. Now out of college, a cub reporter for the Associated Press in Minneapolis, he stumbles across a story describing the murder of a man named Joseph Talbert in a small town in southern Minnesota. Mired in uncertainty, deceit, and lies, Joe must put together the pieces of his family history -- before his quest for discovery threatens to put him in a grave of his own.

Allen Eskens is the bestselling author of The Life We Bury (Seventh Street 2014), The Guise of Another (Seventh Street 2015), The Heavens May Fall (Seventh Street 2016), The Deep Dark Descending (Seventh Street 2017), and The Shadows We Hide. He is the recipient of the Barry Award, Minnesota Book Award, Rosebud Award, and Silver Falchion Award.

Eskens has a journalism degree from the University of Minnesota and a law degree from Hamline University. After law school, he studied creative writing in the M.F.A program at Minnesota State University - Mankato, as well as the Loft Literary Center and the Iowa Summer Writer’s Festival. Allen grew up on the hills of central Missouri. He now lives with his wife in greater Minnesota where he recently retired after practicing criminal law for 25 years.
